The Politically Incorrect Show - 22/02/2000

[Music - Die Fledermaus]

Good afternoon, Kaya Oraaa & welcome to the Politically Incorrect Show on the free speech network, Radio Pacific, for Tuesday February 22, proudly sponsored by Neanderton Nicotine Ltd, the show that says bugger the politicians & bureaucrats & all the other bossyboot busybodies who try to run our lives with our money; that stands tall for free enterprise, achievement, profit, & excellence, against the state-worshippers in our midst; that stands above all for the most sacred thing in the universe, the liberty of the human individual.

[Music up, music down!]

I ended yesterday's editorial in a spirit of resignation, allowing that the bastards couldn't be beaten back. "I surrender!" I said. "Don't you dare!" an American friend e-mailed me. Someone I don't know at all e-mailed the following:

"I read with interest your last PI show editorial. ( I don't reside in NZ but enjoy the daily read [on the internet]). I note that you are tired of the fight against tyranny and collectivism, acknowledging the bastards can't be beaten back. Well perhaps the battle is lost, but I would like to remind you that the war has only just begun. To put things into context, just 50 years ago there was barely a voice of reason against the nihilism of current collectivist government. Now thanks to people such as yourself an army is growing slowly. An army armed with reason and a clear philosophy. By all means give up on the current battle, as tactics necessitate, but I beg you to never surrender the war!
Yours in eventual freedom,
Steve."

Well, I don't seriously propose to surrender; it's just that sometimes the relentless advance of Big Brother & the wanton unreason that fuels him do sometimes seem irreversible. Couldn't I, shouldn't I, just crawl away quietly somewhere & observe the country's descent into full-blown statism from a safe haven, I ask myself?

At times like that I derive special & salutary inspiration from the youngsters coming through. People like Andrew who phoned yesterday & spoke of the pro-reason, pro-freedom activities he is involved in on campus. I reflect on the fact that recently I unburdened myself of the leadership of Libertarianz - because it was now possible to, given the surfeit of fresh new talent the party had attracted. Peter Cresswell is an intelligent, articulate & charismatic successor. I think of youngsters like my Free Radical web master, David Adams, an extraordinarily gifted writer with a sense of life to match, an implacable enemy of the culture of his peers, whose splendid tribute to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony graces the upcoming issue, & I realise anew that in spite of everything the modern education system has done to turn its victims into mindless collectivist zombies, some of them have come through with their integrity, intelligence & individuality intact. Hear this, from David's pen:

When winter trials twist the air to fold In crease of frost, the air enraged with ice, And animals are shackled by the cold To bend their fur from snowy edifice, We, with minds alive, press back against the gale. A swift campaign of coal, electric light, Indoors, where whining winds cannot prevail, Is proud rebuff to primal nature's fright. We act, and shape the earth to monuments Of human needs - we conquer dark with thought. This glow, aflame in human tenements Burns undimmed where human ends are sought. This feral night would smother with its fate, But that we think, we choose - and we create.

Hear that, & know there is hope. I am admonishing myself now. Surrender is postponed.
