A small victory against Big Brother over the past few days coupled with a chilling reminder of just how evil, pervasive & brazen Big Brother is. MP Rodney Hide uncovered a letter from an Inland Revenue lowlife, a Trird, to a doctor demanding the medical records of a patient whom they are auditing. This demand constitutes an outrageous breach of privacy & of doctor/patient confidentiality. As the chairman of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners observed, "It reeks of intimidation of both patient & doctor & I'm very sorry the GP complied & handed the records over - though I can see why he would, given that the IRD could prosecute &, even if it lost, possibly bankrupt the doctor in the process. This sort of behaviour by a state agency is heading towards despotism."

Then the Trirds' General Manager, Operations, said that the demand was justifiable under Section 17 of the Tax Administration Act 1994, which empowers the IRD to uplift any information it deems necessary for its purposes. The appalling thing is that this scum is right. This outrage CAN be justified under Section 17. Section 17 should not be there! The Tax Administration Act should not be there. Come to that, the legalised theft that is tax should not be there!

It is good that Rodney Hide & Dave Henderson are forming a taxpayers' union so that future despotism by the IRD will meet some measure of collective resistance. The bastards have been able to drive people to suicide with impunity hitherto precisely because they were picking their victims off one at a time, with the victims having nowhere to turn. Hopefully that will now change. In the meantime, to the IRD for its shameless over-riding of the confidentiality of medical records, this salute from one of your spiritual kin.

Some other fascists, those from the Auckland City Council suffered a setback on Friday when the High Court ordered the destruction of the private investigator's report on ABC (Abolish Bureaucratic Crimes) founder Adrian Chisholm commissioned by the Council. The impertinent Mr Chisholm had had the temerity to ask for a copy of the report. He had occupied the Mayor's office because the Council wouldn't release it. Libertarianz supporters had joined him (one of them, the redoubtable Joy Faulkner smoked cigarettes in the Mayor's office!). Still, on Friday, the situation was stalemated, with the Council's insurers saying they would fight to the wire against releasing the report. In the end a deal was struck whereby Mr Chisholm would observe a gagging order on the matter & all copies of the offending document would be destroyed. Not as satisfactory as having the report released, perhaps, but at least it cannot now be used by the Council in its bid to thwart Mr Chisholm's ongoing attempts to secure redress for the Council's recent wrongs against him & hundreds of others in the Hauraki Gulf.

One further note here - private enterprise should never collaborate with statist filth, & the lawyers, the private investigator & insurance firms who assisted the Council in this matter should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for having done so. To Adrian Chisholm, on the other hand, for his courage, tenacity & success in beating the bastards back, the Free Radical Award.
