The Politically Incorrect Show - 30/05/2001

[Music - Die Fledermaus]

Good afternoon, Kaya Oraaa & welcome to the Politically Incorrect Show on the free speech network, Radio Pacific, for Wednesday May 30, proudly sponsored by Neanderton Nicotine Ltd., the show that says bugger the politicians & bureaucrats & all the other bossyboot busybodies who try to run our lives with our money; that stands tall for free enterprise, achievement, profit, & excellence, against the state-worshippers in our midst; that stands above all for the most sacred thing in the universe, the liberty of the human individual.

[Music up, music down!]

That was certainly a funny old day yesterday, wasn't it? Scattered among the sensible calls were more than the usual number of idiotic ones. Or should I say, scattered among the idiotic calls were fewer than the usual number of sensible ones?! I was alert to the likelihood of this after hearing the lady I have dubbed "Timberyard" phone Paul's show. I christened her "Timberyard" after she suggested that President Clinton & big forestry multinationals were involved in a conspiracy whereby the President would bomb the bejeesus out of New Zealand for letting in a swarm of Chinese boat-people, thereby necessitating large-scale reconstruction that would be good for the timber tycoons. There's a doctoral thesis to be done on this woman - she speaks coherently & sounds perfectly sane until you register what she's saying. Anyway, when she's on the loose other lunatics seem to be emboldened to phone talkback as well. I certainly got my share of them yesterday, including the gentleman with the elaborate plan for discouraging people from using private motor vehicles to get around in - two carless days a week, meters on wheels, etc..

It's a fascinating tapestry that confronts talk-back hosts - rich, creative & enlightening in places, unintelligible & threadbare in others. There are times when one wants to scream, "Is there any intelligent life at all out there? Is it only morons & retards who are listening?" For a talk-show host committed to individual liberty & self-responsibility, the surfeit of imbecility can be disheartening, frightening even - you listen to these drones & remind yourself that they have the vote (a disaster that certainly helps explain the popularity of the current government). You remind yourself that they are probably living off your money & are militantly, mindlessly committed to their "right" to go on doing so. They tempt you to throw in the towel.

But throw in the towel I shan't. These creatures CANNOT be the norm, otherwise nothing would ever get done or produced, & they themselves would have nothing & no one to cannibalise. But to the rational & the productive out there, I say, let YOUR voices be heard as well. You have a world to win, & only the leeches to lose. Talkback is a powerful weapon at your disposal. Do not surrender it to the leeches; USE it. Yesterday I put out for your edification visiting writer Charles Murray's comments about abolishing the welfare state, "lock, stock & barrel." There should have been deafening applause; instead, there was deafening ... silence.

End of sermon. Shall we take it once more from the top, with feeling - & intelligence?
